If I already have a R-13 and already feel like buying another clarinet..well how many people here have 2 professional clarinets? I would figure its good to have 2 just in case one breaks...anyway....how many people have a A clarinet? Is there a point in getting a A clarinet?

If you plan to play in an orchestra (or the Nielsen wind quintet) then an "A" clarinet is invaluable. Otherwise it would likely just collect dust.

.........so if one breaks..............the A clarient is in a different key. If you are looking for a backup to your R13 Bb, tehn you need another Bb. If you are looking for another clarinet but in a different key, then consider an A.
spare Bb?.............while playing, I've had a spring break adn pads fall out. Now I always take 2 Bb's. I simply uise a double case.
need for an A clarinet?..........yes, if you intend to play in an orchestra, even a community orchestra or in a quartet/quintet.
transposing an A part to Bb is not too difficult to write; PLAYING it can be a nightmare. I'm playing Capriccio Espanol........there are A and Bb parts.
Playing the A parts transposed to Bb would not a pleasant experience.
Like a C clarinet, the A gives a different tonal coloring.
A clarinetist once wrote out the transposition from a part in C to Bb (Moldau by Smetana). Upon hearing it in rehearsal, the conductor mentioned that if the composer wanted it to sound like a Bb clarinet, he would have written it for Bb clarinet .........so I loaned him my C.

I can afford now to have backups for my main clarinet, alto & tenor sax, and flute. In fact, in some cases I have begun to use the backup as the primary. I actually have four classic professional models (my R-13 is not #1) and have had to go to a backup at times.
You comment on "if one breaks" is extremely valid. My favorites techs are each an hour an a half (opposite directions). Also, since the demise of the local music store, tech are harder to find.
I'm not an orchestra player so I have no need for an A. But I do have two oboes and a bass clarinet as I work a lot of shows. Maybe you might like to pick up a bari sax or a bassoon; now there are some fun instruments!

Getting an A clarinet is probably a good idea. As I have written before, I do at least 90% of my practice work using the A clarinet. The added resistance, length, weight and "darkness" (for lack of a better term) of the A clarinet, makes the Bb clarinet play that much easier.
Looking at my clarinet inventory (more than 30 total, all brands), they include:
6 R13 Bb (I recently sold one)
3 R13 A
1 pre R13 Bb
1 pre R13 A
1 R13 Eb
1 R13 C
- various others include Amati, Leblanc, Selmer, Couesnon, Yamaha, Normandy, Evette Schaeffer and 4 metal clarinets.

Another reason to consider A or C (or other than another Bb clarinet) even if you're not in an orchestra is if you play improvised music or your own music and just like to change between different instruments during a concert.
