In a few words;
You are paying for some tools that you could get at a hardware store for much cheaper, but woudn't now what to do with them.
The value of the package is the video and book that explain a technique to adjust reed that is not traditional (ATG= Against The Grain). I have been using it for a while and it is definitely one of the easiest way to balance reeds. An expert reed maker may not agree with me, but it works quite well for me.

Of course, everyone on this board has their own pet ideas...but do try the Ridenour ATG System.
Pay attention to the video and book. You will be surprised!
Working reeds against the grain, as described, will make any reed at least playable.
The old canard never work againt the grain, is just that, a canard.
It's expensive, but worth it.

you're buying exposure to a methof of reed balancing. A balanced reed enables fast response, solid response of your set-up. Like a quick jump into and out of the altissimo register --slurred, ppp that an imperfect reed makes impossible.
You're buying insight, and its worth every cent and the effort required to get the hang of using it. Mine sits at my left hand at my practice statioin --even though it takes only minutes to perfect a reed with Ridenour's system.

Read my other posts on the ATG system for more detailed info, but in a nutshell: Using a VERY easy system (ATG), I now play on great reeds all the time. I now get 8-9 killer reeds out of every box. I no longer have "decent" reeds that I might use for practice - I just play on very good-to-great reeds all the time. Period. Best $ I ever spent on any clarinet-related item (outside of lessons, or course!)

So what's the consensus as to best place to purchase an ATG system? I tried WWBW (before bankruptcy) and the ATG was on perpetual backorder. Thought about Tom's website, but couldn't get the pay-pal thing to accept my credit card. Suggestions?

Thank you for replaying mags1957. However, your claim to play on good/great reeds all the time is hard to believe. It sounds like w/ the atg you can balance a reed and tip to make it responsive in a very optimal way. Do you consider a reed of bad cane that is balanced to be a good reed? At most, practice reed if you ask me!

Without the ATG system (which I don't own) I find that with my reed prep that I play 8-9 reeds out of a box. And I don't do much to reeds.
Now I wouldn't perform with all of them, but with the weather changing constantly...

I personally like the ATG. The ATG is fast and easy to use, I use almost all reeds now. You will see that the ATG system repays itself, by having to buy less reeds.

I meant what I said. Of course, there are usually 1-2 reeds per box that I can't get to be great with the ATG. These would have been my "practice reeds" in the old days. But now, since I get 8 or 9 reeds out of every box to be great, I just throw these "practice reeds" away. I use Rico Grand Concert thick blank reeds. I find them to be more consistent than Vandoren. A good Vandoren is the equal of any reed out there, they're just too inconsistent for me. Using the ATG with the Ricos, I get 8 great reeds out of every box. Honestly.

I am just getting into the ATG system having had it for about a month now and it is working pretty well. However, I think Tom's video falls short on some of the finer details unless I am missing something. For example, he first shows working the sides to initially balance the reed. Then he shows just working the corners of the tip at an angle and then he shows even finer adjustment at the extreme top of the corners. However, he doesn't really tell you when to use each one. Just yesterday I got a 56 Rue Lepic to play pretty well. I can't really tell much difference in the side to side test but the altissimo register doesn't come out well and squeaks alot. I don't know what to do at this point. I think he could have done a better job in how to deal with specific symptoms once the reed seems well balanced. Any thoughts?
