 Inspiring Words from Lynn Harrell
Author: Ken Shaw 2017

Lynn Harrell gave a wonderful commencement address at the Cleveland Institute of Music in 1994. He spoke about his undergraduate work, "dintism" (keeping after it) and a lesson from George Szell about playing with passion. http://mklreeds.com/flarp/archives/2006/12/14/life-lessons-from-a-cellist/

Words to write on your heart and put up on your wall.

Interesting concept: to realize that we pass by the music, while it persists. Now, that's one great differences between improvised music and the performance of written material.

Thanks, Ken

This was sent along to my grown kids and a couple of others who know music. There are quite a few separate issues that can be derived from this depending on which stage of experience you are at the moment, issues that reach beyond music.

My youngest, at 22, was excited about this speech and printed out a copy for himself. He said that he understands what Lynn means by thinking that "you've arrived" when in reality the journey's just begun and you need a good kick in the behind to get you off your laurels. He was 6 months in Central America on his own and improved his Spanish, earned many friends, and took hundreds of photos of his travels. When he got home he thought he'd "arrived" and that things were finally figured out...until a year later now that he thinks about what he's done in the meantime. So this really hit home with him. BTW, he's in agreement with the matter of going beyond just playing technically well. He's the one out of all of them who's most sensitive and responds to the emotional reach of music as therapy.

Now about his older siblings, we'll see. My young student's about to hear excerpts from this speech as well. Is an 11-yr-old capable of understanding how to make her audience laugh and cry? Well at least her Mom is. We've talked about this before during her lessons and Mom knows what I'm talking about.
