 C Clarinet

I'm thinking of buying a C clarinet. I can't spend a lot. I saw an Amati on the internet that was wood around 550.00. Does anyone have a recommendation or know of any other brand the has a wood C clarinet that's pretty good? I can't afford the Buffet's (sigh...).

I play a Buffet E11 that plays with an even scale and can be played in tune with little extra effort. It is a wood clarinet--except for the bell--and cost me about $800 five years ago. Perhaps you could find a used one for less.

The Buffet E11 C clarinet now lists for $2,620.00, with a street selling price of (from various sellers) ranging from $1,345.00 to $1,690.00 or more ...GBK

I've got a Ridenour Arioso C and a 1960's Noblet Artist C both great sticks BUT

.....search the BB archives for Arioso C and Forte C. (Looks like the Amati C was the starting point for Omar's Forte C)

You'll find good reports on both here.

(Disclaimer - I am maker of the Forte' Bb and C clarinets)
In the sub - $1000 street price market there is the Amati 351 C and Forte' C clarinets in wood. A discription of the differences can be found at: http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=225148&t=225140

In the $1000-$2000 street price range are the Buffet E-11 C, Ridenour Arioso (in hard rubber), and Noblet C. Prices jump dramatically after $2000.

Check the archives for numerous discussions on C clarinets.

Patricola CL-7's (grenadilla) used to sell for about 2K. I don't know what they sell for now, now that Buffets appear to have gone up. I love mine.

Leblancs (Normandie, Noblet) are nice-sounding horns and cheaper than the Patricolas, but not sub $1000.

What about a used one?

Tom Ridenour's web site has some impressive audio clips of his C clarinet.

FWIW I enjoy my Forte' C.
I had an older Leblanc that was nice, but the Forte has IMO a sweeter sound.
Patricola horns are respected, but I have no experience with the C instrument.
Naturally, if you have the need (pro level), the Buffets etc are there to try.

Disclaimer:I do have an abiding respect for Dr Henderson and recommend his products for my barrels, but this is done without compensation.

I have an Amati C which I have been using for the past year and a half and it seems fairly decent although there are some tuning issues.
I had ordered an Arioso C before that but it arrived out of adjustment.

Now I'm thinking about getting a Forte.....I use a C clarinet about half the time in a klezmer band I and need a back up C horn.

Any feedback on the Forte C before I order one....? Are they in stock?

Kfeder....see my note posted just above your posting.
GBK has also reported on it (check search of board)
Overall, the response has been outstanding.

Pr:

I purchased a Forte C from Omar H this summer and am very pleased with the sound and generally good craftsmanship of the product.

What tuning issues did you observe? I noticed mine (Amati 251) is on the sharp side generally and ordered a longer barrel. Pulling the existing one accordingly made it play in tune okay - not exactly like a reference system but good enough for me.

Ben,
I'm not sure I have an accurate explanation for the tuning issues; I have the barrel pushed all the way in and I seem to be playing out of tune on some of the higher notes.......when I get a chance I'll check more carefully with a tuner and see if I can get a better idea and then I'll post again .
I'm usually switching between the Bb and the C from song to song....

From what I've read here and there, certain instruments are considered harder to play in tune.....I've heard this said about C clarinets and Soprano
saxes........I would guess this would be because of the shorter length of the instrument. Ken
