 Governor's School Solo

I've been nominated this year to attend Governor's School East-Meredith College, Raleigh NC. It's a 6week musical camp/education camp. I was nominated for instrumental music. It's a great honor to do so but to be accepted you have to audition with a solo piece of your choice less than two minutes. I'm the only clarinet at my school and of all the ones I know who actually was nominated to this. I don't know anyone at all who can help me. I have my piece for All District which I think is something to easy. I want a piece that exhibits all my playing abilities and talents, but isn't out of reach. What do you suggest?

Congratulations

I did Governor's School in North Carolina many, many years ago. You'll have a great time.

How about the 3'rd movement of the Stravinsky Three Pieces.

What pieces have you played well already? That'll help everyone get a grasp for the level of music you can play and what pieces they think will be good for you!

Good luck!

I did Governor's School in Virginia several years ago and auditioned with the Mozart and a Rose Etude. It went over very well. I got accepted. There were only two of us.

Whatever you pick, play well, but I will always suggest Mozart for this sort of situation. It's delicacies and sweeping melodies and such display and the falcultae that you have developed as a musician.

I did Governer's School West in NC many years ago, too.

Congrats on getting in. If I remember correctly (and it's still the same), East does band, so they'll probably have a lot more to clarinets to place (West is orchestra so it was pretty easy). I'd just play something uncomplicated and representative. One of the Rose etudes might be good, as the audition is to see more where they should place you, and any of the Rose would give them sufficient idea of your facility.

well ive narrowed it down to three pieces. 3rd Movement-Stravinsky Three pieces, Adagio from Concerto K.622-Mozart, and 2nd Movement Concerto #1 Weber. I have to play all three to see if they're under two minutes. Anyone personally played any of these? What is your opinion on the pieces?

The Mozart and Weber are both longer than 2 minutes unless you play excerpts. Stravinsky I don't know. What about 1st or 5th Finzi bagatelles?

All great selections. Play a part of whatever selection you choose. You can play only a part of the Mozart or Weber and do well with it.

The Weber, you'd only be able to play the 16th note passage or maybe the beginning to the start of the 16th note passage. If you play it, subdivide like crazy and be extremely musical.
