Any fans of Korngold's chamber music and operas? He did some great film scores also....

Count me in! I've played the Violin Concerto a couple of times, also suites of his film music -- Errol Flynn swashbucklers! Best of all, his opera "The Dead City" is spectacularly beautiful. I was fortunate to attend a dress rehearsal at Catholic University a couple of summers ago when my son was playing trombone in the orchestra. The nude scenes in the dress rehearsal got dressed up real quick when it opened the next night!

Kensington Symphony Orchestra (www.kso.org.uk) often plays korngold. On October 18 the orchestra's 50th birthday concert at the Barbican in London will include music from The Sea Hawk featuring a male chorus (missing from the LSO CD) and some fragments still to be released from the studio's archive in Hollywood.

In the last few years we played a concert performance of the opera Tote Stadt, the First Symphony and the violin concerto.

Warning to all clarinet players - these pieces have fiendish 1st clarinet parts with solos that rival Niesen and Tippet for difficulty.

I love the violin concerto. It's a great piece to listen to!

Anyone played the concerto or the quintet? I sight read through the concerto when at the RCM, has some interesting moments, would love to prepare it for a concert. Chris would the Kensington Symphony be interested?

Korngold fans might check out the clarinet transcription of two pieces from his "Much Ado About Nothing" suite. Masters Music publishes it (M2774). Available for $6.50. :)

Peter,

Your post intrigues me. Do you also play violin or are you talking about a Korngold clarinet concerto and clarinet quintet (neither of which I've ever heard of but which would be most interesting).

Best regards,
jnk
