The questions:
I now play on an a, but was thinking of trying b.
However, I've also heard good things about c and d.
If I purchase b, will it give me more x?
If I decide on b, will I also have to change y and z, or will they work the same?
My section mate has c, will it be ok to use b when we play together?
The responses:
"My teacher only recommends b."
"I've had b for 3 weeks and it definitely gives me more x."
"My second cousin's friend has b and he got into Peabody."
"I used to have a and c but sold them. But now I've gone back to c."
"My current teacher plays d and sounds great!"
"Before deciding, try as many of b, c and d as possible."
"I have an old g, they are hard to find, but be on the lookout."
"Instead of getting b, perhaps changing e and/or f would work better."
"Do a search. Hope that helped. Good luck."
The conclusions:
a, b, c, and d will all work just fine, but you'll get a bit more x with c.
No matter what you purchase, you will always sound like z.
Buying a, b, c, or d is a personal decision.
This same thread, complete with all variations will repeat in 3 weeks.
Guaranteed.

I've only been reading the bboard for a little over a week, but I'd have to say your formula does satisfy a lot of the general questions asked about equipment.
I'll add that I've also found the forum to be helpful and inspirational, and wouldn't suggest that the questions and comments be any other way.

I know about a, b and c,
can imagine a d and f,
and assume by e you mean e flat,
but I never heard of clarinets pitched in x, y or z -
how 'bout that?

Yes! I think everyone needs at least one of a,b,c and d pitched A, Bb and possibly Eb. It would be good to have a couple g's laying around too, just in case. maybe an alto and bass as well. That's my goal! The sad part is that, even if I acheive this lofty goal, I still won't be ready to try out for that second seat in the Charleston Symphony by September, but will be happily sitting with the seconds in the Community Band, where I am now.

If I practice my clarinet here at work, I will get fired. However, jawboning about gear on the BB is safe.
That's why I sit here and discuss rosewood Backun ligatures with silver plating in the key of Gb, rather than practicing.
And larryb, be careful about posting poetry, you might offend some famous clarinetist who doesn't like to see such stuff here.

i agree with GBK and much of what was written above- however, the latest megaposting that started off talking about changing bells actually had a few little snapshots of opinion/advice that for once seemed a tad edifying. That post should be archived as the ultimate "bell nerd thread"
