Anybody use Olivieri reeds besides me?
I like their thickness, great resonance and long life. They're all a little stiff and need scraping but the best of them are the most sonorous and vibrant of reeds. None better for me.

If you like them then what difference does it make if anyone else plays them? I would stick with them since you like them.

That's the wrong question, (and a rather insensitive attitude for a musician) but let it pass.

Never tried them... I'm hooked on V12s for some reason.

I've been using Olivieris on and off for many years, on bass and soprano clarinets -- my observation is that they're cut with a thick heart and vamp (good) and to compensate, a shortish and very thin tip --- and therein lies the 'problem' -- if the tip is not perfectly balanced, the reed tends to squeak, and the tip is the hardest part of the reed to correct if unbalanced (IMO). I can't count the number of Olivieris I've played that had the best sound and response of anything in my instrument case, but were treacherous for a tendency to squeak and so couldn't be relied upon for a performance. With that caveat in mind, I'd certainly recommend trying them, they have a lot to offer.

I just got a couple Rico Grand Concert Select's from the Symposium in OK. They are 3's, which is a tad soft for my VDM15, but I sanded the sides a bit, and they play pretty well now! Still a little soft, but I might consider buying a box of 3 1/2's or 4's next time. The tone is very round. I like my V12's, though, when I find good ones........I dunno, we'll see..........

I've had the same experience as David, with one caveat.

I started using using Olivieri's when Morre's were no longer available. I loved them for the response, the sound, and the uniformity of the reeds. I never had the squeaking problem with them that others had until I changed mouthpieces. For the longest time I used a Gigliotti with no squeaking or chirping at all. I changed to a Hawkins mouthpiece and, man oh man, I now have the chirping that everyone talks about in reference to the Olivieri reeds. For me, it only seems to happen on throat tones. Throat tones just seem so unstable with this reed/mouthpiece combo. Just to be on the safe side I took my horn in and had my guy look at it to make sure there was no leakage in the A/G# key. Everything was fine so I guess it's the reed/mouthpiece combination. I don't have this problem with Grand Concert or Gonzalez reeds, but I don't like the response on them as well as with the Olivieri's. The Gonzlez has too mushy a tip for me and he Grand Concerts are...eh, not quite what I'm looking for.

My last hope is to contact Phil Muncy, who now makes the reeds, and talk with him about any post purchace remediation that may be possible.

I'd hate to have to quit using them, but I can't play with the chirping. There are too many other things to worry about while playing to have to add a problem I didn't even have as a beginner.
