 Buddy DeFranco's Etudes
Author: Bruno
Date:   2006-06-04 22:31

Some years ago Buddy wrote and recorded 10 etudes with a guitarist. They were sold as 2 records along with the etudes on enclosed 10-page music books. Very nice.
It was called, "Love Affair with a Clarinet".
Buddy and the guitarist played on one side of the 2 records, with Buddy taking a solo on each etude after playing the head, and the other side of the platters had the guitarist only so you could do your thing. They're challenging but very nice!

He also has recently arranged and published the Hanon piano exercises for clarinet. I haven't seen it yet but I hear good things about it.
It's called, "Hand in Hand with Hanon".

( I'm a Buddy DeFranco booster. I've known him since we were young.)

I am also a fan of Buddy Defranco. I listen to his cd Mr Clarinet all the time. He an Eddie Daniels are my two favorites now. I have to admit his style took me awhile to really appreciate. The more I listem to them, and Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker the more I am starting to get it. I wish my playing would also get it! :-)

Does Mr Defranco ever do any live performances?

....Jim

Here's a hint to help you play "outside" --
Start your solo on the flat fifth of the first chord and play up, down, and all around the whole-tone scale on that tonality. You'll hear when you have to switch to another of the whole-tone scales. The intervals lend themselves to outside playing.

Does BDF perform? All the time. He lives in the Florida panhandle and tours the midwest from top to bottom and comes once in a while to the east coast.
He's still recording too.
