But did you not switch over 10 minutes before the end of the programme, so as not to miss a second of the Eurovision Song Contest?

(Note for our overseas viewers: if you don't know what the Eurovision Song Contest is, be very glad.)

-----------

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

What, you don't like Klingon extras from some Star Trek movie? Mr. Lordi must have had his name changed so we could pronounce it ...

Heck, this is the contest that brought us both ABBA and Céline Dion ... what else need I say!

But, since the USA's been missing out:
Quote:

"NBC announced plans earlier this year to replicate the formula - a forerunner of "American Idol"-style talent contests - in the United States, with acts from different states competing for viewers' approval.

The European Broadcasting Union, which runs Eurovision, said it was in talks with NBC over rights. If successful, the American version could go ahead as early as this fall, said the group's director of television, Bjorn Erichsen." - http://www.forbes.com/home/feeds/ap/2006/05/20/ap2760980.html

OUCH,

Sounds like the BBC has developed the same low budget mindset as the US TV moguls.

Eurovision Song Contest
The results revealed that the contest is a parody on itself, a musical Klein Bottle, somehow.

But the Klingons did have the best song. Which sez a lot. [tongue]

and my country got one place before last (probably one higher than we deserved), which is funny since we are not even in Europe....

I think it is the first time anyone did something like this. Usually it is all pretty horrible and plain pop songs. So they had to win just because of the original concept!

Countries in Europe don't have the same show as American Idol? We have the 3rd, 4th or 5th (I don't know which it is) season of "A Star Is Born", our version of American Idol. Not to mention "Born To Dance" which is no better....

I know I digress a bit on threads, but hey we were speaking about real music at the start of this thread....where did that go?

The standard this year was really high, but I would have given the prize to last year's winner Scotland's own Nicola Bennedetti again.......her guest appearance playing of two Brahms pieces was fantastic as was her accompanist.

Mark Simpson has a great talent and is a deserved winner but was for me a little of a surprise having listened to the resident pundits' opinions, when he wasn't even mentioned as a potential winner!

You can keep the Neils. concerto ...I just don't understand it..and I'm not alone...maybe an age thing.....but I'm glad someone did understand it.

I did notice that Mark was playing Peter Eaton clarinets. Another score for the good guys !

I (=we an amateur symphonic orchestra) played a concert, where we played Mozart (our Concerto) and Dvorak (new world). The solo-ist in Mozart was fantastic (young guy called Firas Al Alwani) and the Dvorak went really great.

I didn't have problems not to see the songcontest for a moment, .. there ain't nothing like a life performance !!

It was great fun on stage (and afterwards having a few beers, with the friends of the orchestra), so who cares we (Belgium) didn't even make it to the finals. For me 'playing the Dvorak, was lots and lots more fun ..., something only musicians can understand ?

I agree. In fact, I wasn't too keen on any of the pieces except for the Saint Sans Piano Concerto [No 2], which I am very fond of. There were nice bits in all of them, but the kind of music where you actually have to think to understand puts me off.

"but the kind of music where you actually have to think to understand puts me off."

About three years ago I had to think to understand some of the music I listen to the most today.

The more I listen to, and try to play the Nielsen, the more I find things I like about it....not that I'd ever be able to play it in public ! Kudos to a young player who can perform it.

the most impressive thing about mark's performance, i think, was that because of his knowledge as a composer he really understood the piece. he communicated the structure and understood why every note was there. i really enjoyed it! i think he wasn't listed as a potential winner as the pundits didn't like the piece... the female (sorry i can't remember her name!) said she wanted more relaxation in the softer sections.. but i think the piece does not allow that, and it was not a fault of the performer.. a really industrious piece to me, which i thought he captured , and also made the technique sound easy enough to add wit to the performance!! impressive!

Rob,

How do you find it? I searched the BBC site and could not find an audio file of his performance.

You're joking!

Don't the BBC know what 'WWW' stands for?

And now....

Was it just me, or was the French singer terribly out of tune?
