On Sunday afternoons on the Bio chanel, we generally get a couple episodes of Midsomer Murders. The music -- with emphasis on woodwinds -- is really excellent. Though Google search turns up information on the music, eg composed by Jim Parker (who also has written a clarinet concerto), I can't find a word on who the performers are. They are absolutely excellent. Perhaps some of our UK readers would know?
Best wishes,
Vann Joe

ITV's 'Hammer House of Horror' uses clarinets in it's background music - especially the bass clarinet's low reedy tones for that special 'horror' sound effect that only a bass clarinet can do really well.
If you ever see any re-runs of 'Blake's 7' (or buy the DVD boxsets), Dudley Simpson made use of all manner of wind instruments for the incidental and background music.

The clarinet was being played by itself? Or was there a clarinettist playing the clarinet on TV?
Haha... sorry I'm just taking a break from writing a paper and am quite bored.

The clarinet player on Midsomer murders is Ian Herbert.
Ian was principal clarinet at the Royal Opera House for many years
and plays Peter Eaton clarinets.

Hi Jamie,
Thanks for the info. I'll google Ian Herbert to see what I can find.
Your mention of the Royal Opera House really struck me. For some time I've been thinking that the clarinetists I most admire have opera experience. This just confirms what I suspected.
And if you ascribe to "Of instruments, the clarinet is most like the human voice", then it makes sense that -- to my sensibilities -- those clarinetists who work closely with fine singers more fully display the quintessence of clarinet playing.
Thanks for the info, Jamie,
vJoe

Speaking of live clarinet playing on television... anyone see & hear Julian Bliss
with the BBC playing Rabaud Solo de Concours?
