 UK courses on instrument repair

Sorry if this is a dim question.

I'm always really impressed with technicians' ability to fix instrument problems, and wish I knew how. I'm reluctant to experiment for fear of causing serious damage, so I wondered where these people learn their trade?

Do you know whether anywhere (UK-based) runs courses on instrument repair? Or do you have to get an apprenticeship?

As I say, sorry if it's a dim question...

I'm not familiar with them, but Merton is well respected for it's motorcycle mechanic courses...

Thanks David - Merton College is only 20 minutes away from me on the bus, so this is a great help.

That's the first time that's ever happened! Usually stuff like that would be relevant, if only the enquirer didn't live in a log cabin in Montana.

Even with the ...co.uk suffix, I was willing to bet you were from Shetland or somewhere.

A few years ago a good friend of mine applied for musical instrument repair courses in the UK, he applied to three, one in London, one in Edinburgh and one in Leeds, if you like I can get in touch with him and he may remember what they were, he now makes his living out of instrument repair and luckily for me he is within ten minutes walking distance from where I live.....extrememly handy, I also play in his band.

Email ME! if you want the information.

What about Newark in Nottingham?

I think they're geared more towards the manufacturing side.

Just ask to borrow your best buddy's 1970's R-13, saying you'll return it better than it currently is...........and.....................

Yeah, I've often been tempted to 'improve' instruments I've borrowed in the past, and they've never left me without at least one tweak with a screwdriver.

I still have an old Adler 'Caradl' symple German system clarinet which I've added a (missing) LH Ab/Eb key to and repadded (I might replace the side Eb/Bb key as well if I can find one that will fit) - and I borrowed it about 10 years ago! But the owner knows where it is, and she should be happy when she asks for it back.

Wife, the handy one in our marriage, looked into taking instrument repair courses at the local vocational technical (votech) school. Unfortunately it is only offered during the work day and those are eight hour days. The course was nine months without an apprentice time period thrown in.
