My daugher and I will be flying all over the country in the next few months auditioning for colleges. How do you fly with a bass clarinet? The case is to big for the overhead compartment size restrictions. I can't imagine putting the clarinet in the freezing luggage compartment. Any suggestions?

Hi C M - Didn't we have a thread on this recently?, or maybe on Bass_clarinet@Yahoogrroups.com. Is your "problem" for a wood BC, Eb or Low C, or a one-piece [long] case? Luck, Don

The case that always fits in overhead compartments and is OK'd by just about every airline is the Wiseman case. You can get them for either low Eb or Low c instruments and can even get double and triple cases to house other instruments in the same case as your bass. They're very sturdy and highly recommended by most serious bass clarinetists. You can get them at WW & BW I believe or Fred Weiner. Just do a search for them and you'll find them. They ain't cheap, but they're certainly worth it.

In the pretty distant past, I've hand carried my Selmer model 33 low C bass clarinet case on aircraft without a problem. It usually ended up standing vertically in the "hanging clothes" area between first class and coach.
However, that was then (back when they had meals and smoking on flights), not now. For all I know, they may view the bass clarinet as a deadly weapon these days...

I've flown with no problems with my Wiseman case, yes expensive but well worth the investment (and a really nice company to do business with). My Yamaha (low C) case also caused no problem other than arm ache due to the weight of the instrument/case and no shoulder/backpack straps.
The Wiseman also takes 2 other clarinets, which is a god send for me as I rarely ever play just bass and was starting to get fed up of always carrying 2 or 3 cases.
