When I lived in Montana, I "freezed my behind off" a number of times, but never noticed any good changes there. Maybe someone should experiment with that just to see.

All right ...True confession time:
In one of my weaker moments I actually tried to "temper" my reeds by giving them a very quick shot in the microwave oven.

I've seen someone microwave a cocobolo oboe bell, can't remember the exact reason why but it was completely knackered afterwards.
And as for cryogenically treated saxes, I see Howarths offer this treatment - shall I give it a go on my tenor? Not that I'll notice any change as I don't get on with tenor too well at the best of times.

A guy I went to school with who studied with Ronny Reuben put his mouthpiece in an OVEN at 250 to "temper it more" or something like that. Basically the theory was that it would somehow "finish" the mouthpiece better (galvanize, etc)
It sure did "finish" it...........

Alright, if GBK is strong enough to confess, so will I: when I was but a youth I also tried 'tempering' my reeds, but in a regular oven (I didn't tell my Mom). They came out........darker brown.
Then again, they were those cheap Ciccone Symmetricut and Charpen reeds (remember them?) so it was no great loss --- not like I was cooking expensive Vandorens or anything........

The reeds still played awful after baking, and also TASTED awful. I was too young to recognize the marketing implications of my experiment, which is why I'm not a millionaire today. George Foreman is a much smarter man than I...........

As for microwaving.....butter them first!!! If you are watching your fats, use margarine or add Lipitor.

FWIW there are crystalline stuctures in reeds. Silicates. These change with use.
I read a thesis on the microstructure. It did not mention cryo.
I did once cryo a clarinet.....when I went to retrieve it, I came out in the shape of a baseball bat---autographed by Ted Williams!!!

I place them on the D key of my piano keyboard,
and then on every white key up to the next D.
I then I put ice cream on top.
