Just posted about when to upgrade. Great comments, thanks to all. I think the mouthpiece is the one that came with the instrument, the VSP. How do I know? Then, how do I know what will work better? Will my local music shop have an assortment that I can try? Kinda doubt it.
PS: My wife is happy to hear I've a decent clarinet and am not in need of a new one. You know what they say about the toys of men and boys, only difference is the cost!

Try as many as you can, but do try different reeds as well.
The reed you use on your current mouthpiece won't necessarily work with different mouthpieces.

When you swap mouthpieces (and reeds) to compare them, watch out for differences in the ligature. I think you should match the ligatures when you are comparing mpcs. Set up two mouthpieces: ligature, and suitable reed; then compare them.

Bob,
I disagree. For the reason that if they like another mouthpiece with another ligature, why not use that combination? I would say you should try the first mouthpiece with different ligatures and figure out which combo gives THAT one it's best sound. Then do the same for the second mouthpiece, and then compare the two BEST sounds that you get.
