Hi guys!
I´m wondering what should I do, because I bought a new pair of buffet
clarinets few weeks ago and they seem otherwise fine, but the A is quite low in pitch if I try to play it quietly. What should I do, would a shorter barrel do the trick (the shortest one I currently have is 64mm)? Also, when should one oil one´s new clarinet. I have noticed that the A clarinet´s lower joint´s bore isn´t as smooth as it used to be, when I got it so should I oil it or what?
Thanks

Usually new clarinets should not need to be oiled. A lot of ppl are weary about even oiling their clarinets at all. I say get the opinion of your tech.
Have you tried the shorter barrel? The problem might just be with a change in your embouchure when you play softer? Some ppl tend to drop their jow or lossen up a bit.

I hope that a shorter barrel will do the trick. I have found out that when I blow more air in the clarinet on that particular note, it should play in tune, and also it seems that it plays in tune when I try not to put my finger above the hole. I will however try a little bit shorter barrel.
Thanks

If you are letting your fingers hover too close to the hole, it will cause your pitch to go down. That, and air, ought to do the trick. Practice with a tuner and see what you need to do to keep the pitch up. If you're doing embouchure acrobatics, then maybe try the shorter barrel, but I would try those other things first.
I have sometimes had trouble with being sharp, but when I use a longer barrel, it makes my clarinet too out of tune with itself. This is why I'm a little leery of fixing tuning issues with different size barrels, especially if the tuning is not a consistent problem at all volumes and in all registers.
