 Marathon Practicing Sessions
Author: AMJ

Hey All,
I have a nagging question. Iwas wondering the most the any of you have practiced (like hours in a day). This is kind of an idiotic question but an interesting one to say the least.
Thanks, Aaron

Individual or group?

I've had days where I was in rehearsals for over 10 hours.

Solo practice only about 4 - never needed to do more.

Since I got married, had kids and hold down a demanding day job, for me a marathon practice session is 30 minutes or more. I'm not kidding. But that doesn't help answer your question...........

on my own, i've practice for 7 or 8 hours (with 15 minute breaks every couple of hours)

in rehearsal with a group, 9 or 10 hours with a lunch break.

7 or 8 hours would be nice! But since I've got far too many things that distract me from the fun stuff, I play basically as long as I can. 2-3 hours usually per session. The rare long sessions go maybe 5 hours, maybe.

Had clarinet-playing stuff (rehearsals, practices, and more) for ten hours some days with few breaks. Am still paying for it.

I remember All-State rehearsals that would start at 9am and end at 10pm...of course with breaks and lunch for dinner. A pretty stupid idea since most of the works selected were chop killers for the brass players...but what are you to do when all the rehearsal time has to be crammed in during a 3 day weekend?

I've practiced 8 hours before on an off day before All-State tryouts, but my record was about 12 hours on my own. I've had to practice with an ensemble longer. It was painful, to say the least.

My 10 year old grandson views 20 minutes as a "marathon".

;-)

Well, maybe he'll grow into it......

Your grandson and I have a lot in common, John, but I doubt very much that I'll ever grow into it....

The longest would be maybe 8 hours for me. My mouth doesn't really feel the pain at all but my numb buttocks from sitting and my right thumb start to smart.

well I will tell you my hours with a group and by myself,

group- 8-9 hours with a lunch break

by myself- 10-11 hours with 2, 25 min breaks

that is my usual practice time but the hours are worth it you find yourself auditioning for things that are very important and you find yourself making more prestigious groups and making high chairs I never made 2nd chair in my life and I have people who hate me for that but it is because everything in my practice has to be important, just some advice to you but everything depends on you.

Rashad:

I have to quote David on this one "Solo practice only about 4 - never needed to do more."

It's cool that you are so successful with clarinet but if you have to practice 10-11 hrs, then maybe..... i dunno.... isn't there this place called the world and things called food, travel, family, friends, life, love, art, pain, and joy? How can you experience that fully when you are practicing 10-11 hrs a day?

For me, it's 1-3 hours a day. I am successful (I could maybe be more), but I pay that price by choosing to experience life which includes winning AND losing. Good luck with your journey and feel free to live it your way, I just hope it is the most fulfilling choice for you.

"I never made 2nd chair in my life"

Rashad - that just means that you are probably still young. :)

Also, I was just thinking about this. When I do lose, it makes me a better player in the process. It makes me work harder and feel the joy from my labor. Having someone beat the crap out of your playing just makes you work harder and it brings you back down to earth.

Also, if I was at any other school in my school district I'd be 1st chair easily. But no, I was 3rd chair at my school. Do I suck? No! We are all SO STINKING close to each other that it just purely depends on that 1 moment at the auditions (unfortunately for me, I get really nervous). We have to strive to beat each other and that makes us better in the process. I want to be 1st chair next year and I'm doing everything in my power to make it happen, but I'm glad I have the other 2 girls there to keep my on my toes so that I ultimately become a better player in the process.

My advice to you is if you can't find someone your own age that is equal or better than you, then go and play with some older players (1-5 years older, or even join an adult community band/orchestra) where there is someone with more experience/better technique/beautiful tone/precise intonation that will give you something to try to emulate. There is always someone out there that is better than you. Always keep that in mind. Good luck!
