Quartet for the End of Time
Author: Ken Shaw 2017

I came across two very interesting postings on the Messiaen's Quartet for the end of time, by Jeremy Denk, a pianist, http://jeremydenk.blogspot.com/2005/06/release.html and Alex Ross, the New Yorker music critic,
http://www.therestisnoise.com/2004/04/quartet_for_the_2.html

I agree with Ross that the Tashi recording is in a class by itself,

"... Akoka, as vibrant and unpredictable as the Quartet’s long clarinet solo, “Abyss of the Birds,” was an Algerian-born Jew who survived the war through blind luck and mad courage. He tried several times to escape, and, in April, 1941, he succeeded: while being transferred from one camp to another by train, he jumped from the top of a fast-moving cattle car, with his clarinet under his arm..."

That says it all.

Thanks Ken ...GBK

I would also like to reccommend on Erato my former teacher's disc done under Messiaen's guidance. It is with Guy Deplus on clarinet and Messiaen's wife on piano(Yvonne Loriod).

I also admire the Tashi disc greatly as well! It is one of the all time great clarinet records.

Thanks, Ken, for the interesting links.

Jeremy was a colleague of mine while I was at Oberlin in the late 80's, and, in fact, accompanied my junior recital. He was always one of the most amazing pianists at Oberlin, and I'm glad his career continues to gain notice.

That is an outstanding recording, definitely Stoltzman at his best.
