This sounds lame, but anyway I am trying out a clarinet that is said to be a Contrabass, but I realize that I cannot tell a Contrabass from a Contralto. It is a Selmer Rosewood. The insignia reads Henri Selmer Paris. Below that there is an R, below that. Serial number is E 3256.
So is there a sure fire way to tell which it is?
Thanks.

play a C into a tuning meter.
If it registers Eb, its a contra-alto
if it registers Bb, its a contra-bass

Play a C. Check it against a piano.
If it comes out Eb concert, it's a contra-alto. If comes out as a Bb concert, it's a contrabass.
Selmer's Rosewood contrabass also descends to low C. The contra-alto does not.

There's an easy way to tell without using a tuner at all!
If it breaks your back in two places, it's a contra-alto. If it breaks your back in three or more places, it's a contrabass.

Well, in some cases, ppl call the contralto a contrabass... but they have to say "EEb contrabass" so they don't confuse the educated clarinetists. :P We just call them contralto.
Contrabasses usually go over your head when you stand, and most are metal since wooden ones are rare/expensive. lol.
Me love some contras.

Yeah, when I played contra-alto last year in my band, my band teacher always called it the Eb Contrabass.

I still call mine the Eb contrabass. Come to think of it, so does my music. The ones that don't say Eb baritone saxophone or tuba, anyway.
