What does Ben Armato's Reed Wizard do
Author: Ron Jr.

For years I've seen ads for the Ben Armato's Reed Wizard. What does it do? Am I correct in presuming that once you find a reed you like, "The Ideal Reed", you twist some dials and get its measurments at various places. Thereafter, every store bought V12 can be shaved down to the exact measurements as The Ideal Reed.

Take care,
Ron Jr.

That's the basic premise...however you have to find the "perfect" reed.

My only problem with the concept is that this does not take into account the individual density and age of each piece of cane (its not a computer after all). It works pretty well - on average, but you still need to learn how to do minor adjustments (for me the right side of the reed needs to be lighter). It can take your reed closer to an ideal...but one reed cut to a certain dimension will usually feel different than a different reed cut to the same dimension. This is just nature.

That's not the premise at all. No dial to twist - there is his reed measurer (I don't recall right now the name of it) but the Reed Wizard planes the reed evenly to a better dimension.

I use it along with the ATG system and both together are really good. Ben came out with a new version of it last year that works a lot better than the older ones (the older ones used the file - this one has a straight bar, not the file to cut the reed).

Really, really good.

Oh...I was thinking of the reedual. I've tried that out and there is a way to use store bought reeds...but its mostly for cutting blanks. With the reedual you definately need to make minor adjustments. But that piece of equipment is about $600...I think the reed wizard is a lot less, but still about a couple hundred.

Personally, I like a knife and sandpaper...old skool style.
