Does anyone know where you can get a replacement alto clarinet case (one piece)? Would a violin/viola case work- with cut outs for alto clarinet? Why doesnt anyone make these?!

Check on eBay. You might be able to pick up a case WITH the bonus clarinet for lower cost than a new one from the maufacturer.

New cases for one-piece altos made by DEG ran about $95 through International Music Suppliers last time I looked (and didn't buy).

Rubbermaid makes an excellent one with wheels. The great thing is that the garbage man recognizes it immediately and will take care of it for you.

msloss, as an alto clarinet nerd myself, I'm deeply offended by your implication that this fine instrument is an embarrassment and an affront to the clarinet world --- a bastard (not "bassett") clarinet with no real purpose and no usefulness, drifting aimlessly in a sea of more practical and better-loved clarinets, searching for a meaning in life, bleating away in vain while the bass clarinet plays its cues.........
well, maybe you have a point.........but seriously, a well-played alto clarinet (which may be considered an oxymoron by many folks, but actually is a plausible concept) sounds good.
To respond to the original post, I have an extra alto clarinet case somewhere in my deep dark basement, I think. Please contact me off-line if interested.

I have to agree with David S. msloss, that's an unkind thing to say on this board where ALL clarinets and clarinetists should be treated with respect. The Alto Clarinet is a legit member of the clarinet family and sounds a lot better than an Alto Sax, IMHO. I also played Alto for a few years and am sad to see it cast aside in so many bands and orchestras.
By the way, I played Alto because I WANTED to do so, not because I wanted a free ride into marching band. I was a top player and actually liked the way it sounded. I also learned that I didn't need to practice much and had more time for other things--that was a plus for me. However, I'm not interested in playing one now. I enjoy playing Bb soprano.
Oh--and msloss, this thread began with a legitimate question from someone who merely wanted a nice case for his alto clarinet.
My suggestion--call International Musical Suppliers at 1-800-762-1666, or look on eBay.

We, some younger students and I, are planning a clarinet quartet (maybe quintet) this summer. Many numbers will include significant [melody] lines played by bass and by alto clarinet, a valuable asset to any well balanced ensemble. Would anyone dream of leaving the alto part out of a vocal group or make a tenor or baritone try to sing the part? Gimme a break
Allied Supply has a pretty nice one piece alto clarinet case for (dealer price, US) $95.75

I suspect msloss' post was tongue in cheek, y'all --- let's lighten up and turn up the gain a bit on our humor detectors, eh?

You are right, Dave. We alto players/doublers get a bit more sensitive than we should where that "sore spot" has been rubbed so often it's beginning to hurt --- (cranks up the gain a Lot... )
Happy Tootin' to y'all

ATT'N, US Nerds. arise and be counted [on]. A fine commentary, D S. When I brought my Sel-Par A C to Tulsa Comm[edy] band, I just withstood the "knowing?" looks with a sly smile, and thot "what they dont know, may not hurt, but could help !!". We are now concertizing playing "Fantasy on Yankee Doodle" which, as it turns out, has a "delicate" unison BC and AC soli !, volume/pitch/rubato=free rhythm joining-in with the Bb cls, where the BC goes across the break [diff. tonalities of D,C,Bb,A]. Being the only BC/AC, I tried it on AC, [its only a 4th lower] with great success and satisfaction to all, and some compliments! So I happily "juggle" two good-sized horns for a bit. I will investigate other pieces for full-time AC playing, if another BC player shows up, or I'm covered by the tubas. FUN?, Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

Goodness, gracious me! At least David got the joke. I find it interesting that the denizens of the board seem to have no problem at all savaging Buffet, Guy Chadash, David Hattner's fingering suggestions, Vandoren V12 reeds, Acker Bilk and Richard Stoltzman, but use the alto clar as the punchline in a joke and somebody's nose gets out of joint.
If y'all can't play alto clarinet and maintain a sense of humor, try a lighter reed because the intracranial pressure is causing brain damage.
