Can someone please tell me what sizes of clarinets are written in this composition? What is there besides the soprano Bb?

Thanks.

Willy

So no C, alto, or contras?

Don't recall a bass, but it has been a long time since I played it.

Yes, there is DEFINITELY a bass clarinet. I've played the part!

i have a copy of the score in hand. there are 4 clarinet parts.

clarinet 1: Bb / A
clarinet 2: Bb / A
clarinet 3: Bb / A
Bass Clarinet in Bb

massive orchestration. 3 bassoons, plus contra bassoon. 3 oboes, plus english horn, and 4rd oboe doubles on bass oboe. 2 harps (two!) , organ, celetsa, 6 timpani, offstage female chorus, 4 flute parts including 2 piccolo and an alto flute 6 horns, plus lots more.

we had trouble getting everyone on stage when i played this last year.

You'll be hard pressed to find altos and contras in much orchestral lit. Heck, even the Eb doesn't make its way in nearly as much as I'd like.

Thank you all for the info. A local orchestra has it in the upcoming concert, I thought I might approach them for a chance to play it if the score had alto or contra parts. Oh well...

They have contrabassoon and harps, but I wonder if they would be able to locate a bass oboe or alto flute.

bass oboe is rare. theres a place in california that will rent you one, and even has reeds. not real common however. there are cues scattered throughout the clarinet and bassoon parts.

alto flutes are relatively common, at least around here. the score calls for bass flute in G. this is what we call an alto flute today. i think modern bass flutes are pitched in C - one octave below the 'normal' flute. but i dont pretend to be a flute expert ;)

The bass oboe is usually done on cor anglais. But once you've heard it with a real bass oboe, you'll know the difference.

The third clarinet part is just for Bb- not A. Only clarinets 1&2 play for certain movements. (We are playing The Planets this semester.)

So.... finally scoring is like this-

Clarinet 1 -Bb&A
Clarinet 2- Bb&A
Clarinet 3- Bb
Bass Clarinet

Interesting... if that's the case, we are going to have to scrounge up a third A for our third clarinet. AND she's never played A before- should be interesting to see how this one gets solved.

just before Xmas i played this as 3rd clarinet for the Auckland Philharmonia, i can't remember if i needed my A clarinet or not, but i do remember that the 3rd part is often quite exposed, and the 2nd and 3rd parts often "felt equal" in importance... for what it's worth.
