Hi
I was going to order some CD (of bass clarinet, what else?) and found this one by Boulez called Domaines. It's for bass clarinet and orchestra. Has anyone heard it before and can tell me if it's any good?
Judging from the only Boulez piece I know (something for piano) I wouldn't buy it, but I heard it's not as 'crazy'.
Thanks.

BOULEZ IS GOD...to some extent...really, he is a magnificent composer, and one who doesn´t turn retro in his olden days, like others (yes, you, Mr Penderecki, e.g.), he just doesn´t slow down. Now, "Domaines" is for soprano-clarinet in B originally, what You´ve found is probably a transposed version. It´s either played as a solo, or with chamber orchestra (Eduard Brunner the Great played it on "Dal Niente", ECM). There´s 2 times 6 large pages containing 5 relatively short note-strings, from bursts to rows of harmonical playing; the sequence of the elements is to be chosen by the performer, as long as all elements are played, all pages. It´s an absolutely perfect composition, daring, demanding, complex. What else is on this CD ?

Thanks for your answer.
The CD only has this piece on it, played by Michel Portal. Actually, I'm not sure why I thought it was bass clarinet. Now that I look again I don't see it written anywhere so maybe it is Bb clarinet.

The Portal CD is for Bb clarinet. In Cahier F Original, the ensemble part is written for solo bass clarinet. Perhaps that's what you're referring to?

Buy anything played by Portal, he´s an extremely able performer, one of those who can just play everything brilliantly and do it with a huge smile on his face...
