 Derivations-Gould

Has anyone ever played this with just the piano ? I want to do the piece, but don't have access to a big band. Does it work with just piano? I have to admit, I don't see it.

I heard this work played live by John Bruce-Yeh with a large wind ensemble and the effect--along with his flawless technical performance (from memory) was pure musical enjoyment from beginning to end. It is an exciting piece of clarinet literature, and it should also work--albiet to a lesser degree--with just the piano accompaniment. I would advise "going for it". If I had to wait for an orchestral opportunity every time I wanted to perform the Mozart Clarinet Concerto, it would remain on my practice stand, solo and unaccompanied. Same goes for many of the other concertos in our repretoir. As for the Gould, if the only option for performance is with a piano--like, the Greater Miami Symphonic Band is currently unavailable--then for the pure sake of personal musical enjoyment, perform it with the piano. Most members (all?) of your audience will most likely not realize the difference--unless they were with me in Chicago to hear JBY with the DePaul University group. Good luck and have fun.
