I'm mainly a saxophone player, but I consider myself to be decent on clarinet. I am teaching one of my friends how to play clarinet, and was wondering what strength of reed would be good. I was planning on buying one of Vandoren's twin packs, but I am at a loss of what strength would be good. This student has played clarinet for a few years several years ago, but is basically relearning everything now. We are both freshmen in college. I am a music ed major, she is an elementary ed major.
So, to summarize, what strength of Vandorens would be ideal for a beginner?

The facing of the mouthpiece has a lot to do with reed selection...GBK

what gbk said - depends on the mouthpiece.
i start most beginners on a vandoren 5rv-lyre and vandoren traditional (blue box) #3's. sometimes #2.5's for 2-3 weeks, then move to #3.

I agree with Carol and GBK.
I would use a #2, if it will play on the mouthpiece, for a beginner with an undeveloped embouchure. This will produce early results and encourage the student.
After a few weeks, start to move gradually towards the reed strength that the developing embouchure can comfortably handle and is suitable for the mouthpiece.
It doesn't cost much to experiment.

I believe that the mouthpiece is a Yamaha 4C. It came with the Yamaha student clarinet that she is playing.

I started out on the Yamaha 4C with Vandoren 2's (blue box), and after a few weeks went to 2.5's. I think a Vandoren 2 or Rico 2.5 would be good on that mouthpiece.

Get Mitchel Lurie # 2 or 2 1/2 for the starter or grand concert #2. The Vandorens are much too inconsistantly for somebody just starting out - the good are very good and the bad are unplayable.
Another really, really great reed to try for him are the Gigliotti Advantage reeds which you can get as #2 (they run a little hard) which would work perfectly with the Yamaha 4C and have a good sound.

I have a Hite Premier mouthpiece, which, I believe is similar to the Yamaha 4c and I always had good luck with Rico or Rico Royal 2 or 2.5. I now use a 3.0 but that took a while.

Oh, David reminded me, yes Mitchell Luries were great when I started out on that mouthpiece also. I was trying out a lot of different things, and Mitchell Luries were generally consistent and good.
