Does anyone know the age of Kholert's & Sons 293547 Bass Clarinet? Also where can I research serial numbers?

Kohlert (originally V.Kohlert, V. Kohlert's Sohne, later Kohlert-Winnenden, Germany) --- no serial number list exists that I know of. I've restored maybe a half-dozen Kohlert bass clarinets (two of which play on myself) and a Kohlert alto clarinet, so I'm quite familiar with their more recent (post-WW2) models. Depending on the version of the brand name and the place of manufacture (Kraslitz, or Bohemia, or Graslitz, or Winnenden Germany) they were made from around the early 1900s to early 1970s.

Bernard Moosmann, a German bassoon builder who took over the Kohlert company, once told me that he didn't receive any serial number lists from the old owners. Also in Kraslice (Graslitz), where Amati is the successor of Kohlert, they can't help with details. A hint is that the term 'Czecho-Slovakia' was only used between 1919 and 1939.

I don't know what's available to the US market, but the book that I would recommend to vintage wind players is "The New Langwill Index. A Dictionary of Musical Wind-Instrument Makers and Inventors". After Langwill, William Waterhouse has improved, increased etc etc to this amazing book, which is published by Tony Bingham, 11 Pond Street, London NW3 2PN. phone +44 171 794 1596
The book contains an alphabetical list of all (or at least as many as it contains!) the makers in Europe during the 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries. It also helps give many clues as to manufacture dates etc etc....worth a look. It is quite expensive and if you only want information about one instrument then it will be a lot of money to fork out. Probably in the region of 150 USD. It's not useful for dating with serial numbers, but it contains many other clues that can help you date your instrument, and it's a great book!

I use the Langwell to answer the questions right here (it's an expensive book).
But of course that requires people to do a search, since there's no way I'm going to copy the information twice.
