Hey all. Two things: first, I'm pumped that there is a klezmer forum, that's very cool. Second, and the actual reason behind posting: have any of you heard of the recording titled:
"Oy to the world: A Klezmer Christmas"
I have a dubbed version on tape, but it's kind of crappy and old and jumpy.... I'm pretty sure it was originally on CD. The trouble is I'm having great difficulty in finding it. CD searches have been fruitless, and Napster (gasp! piracy!) even more so, due to the fact that searching from "klezmer christmas carols" just brings up some klezmer and some christmas carols.
Anyway, it's really funny, and if anybody at all you plays clarinet and knows what klezmer is has not heard it I encourage you to do so, if you can find it. And if you do find it, please reply to this post saying where it can be found, because I'd like to know.

I saw Sharim perform their Kletzmer Nutcracker and picked up their CD containing it. Brilliant Clarinet work. I had always kinda thought kletzmer clarinet was just a squawky clarinet sound but the work they did on this CD. Their concert was excellent providing a variety/history of the differnt types of kletzmer before launching into their version of the nutcracker. My fav was their rationale... tsaikowsky probably had jewish friends in russia and really wanted it to sound like that! They changed the names so it became "Tanze of the Latke Queens" etc.. very entertaining. Blake Washington, DC

I turned up quite a few hits for this at www.jewishmusic.com, using their "search cassettes and cd's".

That, and many other recordings have been reviewed on the KlezmerShack--just type "Oy to the world" in the search box and you'll find the review, complete with contact info

My uncle has that CD- it's hilarious! I have no idea where he got it, though. You might try http://www.gemm.com/.

Funny: A few years ago, Amina Alaoui, an algerian contemporary woman, wrote a very "arabic-klez" tune called "Ya dounia", which means exactly "Oy to the world".
