One part of my playing which I am insecure about is playing all the chirps, laughs trills etc. I can do most of them but don't understand how I'm doing them. How often should one play all these things without them sounding overplayed?

This is a hard question, Mike. I guess you have to use your best judgement when it comes to this. First of all, you need to be able to play the ornaments decently, and then the hard part comes when trying to decide where to put them in. This is a problem I have to think about a little bit, myself. One cannot leave the music to bland and boring, but on the other hand, it can easily be overdone. One of the best things you can do is to listen to others, and learn from them. Get a couple of recordings of your favorite artists, and see if you can't learn a few of the numbers by ear. Play through them, and try to imitate the artist. Eventually you will get to a point where you are more secure with adding ornamentation, and even develop your own style. Its a learning process, though. I still question myself every now and then, and often try different things, and styles, and decide which sounds the best to me. Good luck to you. :-) -- Nate Zeien

You might actually enjoy hearing from several professional clarinet players on the Jewish-Music mailing list.

Enjoy!

P.S. (For info on KlezKamp and KlezKanada, you can check the KlezmerShack calendar, http://www.klezmershack.com/klezcalender.com , and sign up at a place where you can spend the week doing intensive learning.)
