 The Ethnic Clarinet

Does antone know anything about a clarinet i have been given. The marking on it is v.kohlert, sohnr, grslitz, czecho-slovakia, A 247822. If anyone has any idea of its age or any details about it. Also is a clarinet like this worth restoring, its in good condition buts needs all new pads, springs etc a full overhaul i think. So if anyone has an idea of approximate value of a clarinet like this i would be very gratefull for info.

I don't really now but on average that kind of work is between 200-400 so as long as it is at least that value it is!

I have a similar instrument that I personally "restored". It has a nice sound and I enjoy playing it. Whether it is worth paying someone for restoring it is strictly a personal matter.

If it is made in Czechoslovakia it is later than the 1956 uprising. It may still be worth restoring. I have an 1870 Kohlert clarinet and a Kohlert Bassoon both of which are good horns.

I have one with essentially identical markings. I know for sure that it is pre 1956 because by then I had acquired it used. I have consulted a friend who teaches history about the hyphenated Czecho-Slovakia (used for only a short time). That combined with the fact that it was made in Graslitz would most likely put the manufacturer date into the late 1920s or early 1930s.
I used mine with mouthpieces from the 1950s for years, but found that I had to have the upper socket of the barrel turned out a couple of millimeters to fit current mouthpieces (apparently not all standards are standard). However, I love the horn and keep it as a back up for my Selmer. I have no plans to ever part with it.
Perhaps a consideration in whether or not you want to restore it would be whether it is HP or LP (mine is LP). If it is not also marked with that information, I would put it at the more recent end of the manufacture range.
