You know, I have very little knowledge of klezmer other than having a couple of CDs and going out with Abe Galper to hear some klezmer live. What I think would be fun is if a few of you could get together, write a glossary up for me, and record some basic sounds that belong with the glossary (anything in the public domain or that you've made up, of course). Sometimes explanations can only go so far!

Greetings, Mark. I read this quite a while back, and agree with your idea. Some of the ornamentation in klezmer clarinetting is a little hard to try to explain, especially to some beginning klezmer clarinet. I've both read about, and listened to klezmer ornamentaion a bit. I have learned far more by listening, and playing, trying to imitate what I have heard. Like learning to pronounce words in a foreign language, it is best to actually hear the sounds you are trying to reproduce. I am very much interested in helping out with this project of klezmer glossary of terms and sounds. To be honest, it may well be a while before I have to time to devote. My studies have taken priority over a lot of things, and at present, haven't any room for more projects. This next summer, though, looks to be a good possibility. I hope to be able to help, then. -- Nate Zeien
