I don't know if this isn't off-topic, but I haven't heard it yet, and it seems to be related to klezmer. My father was told by a friend that Prokofiev had composed a piece for clarinet, piano and string quartet. He said it was variations on a klezmer theme.
Has anyone heard/played it? How is it?
Thanks
Jonathan

it's called overtune on a hebrew theme, or variations on a hebrew theme, or something like that. I've got the music around somewhere; I played it a copuple of years ago. It';s also been aranged as a clarinet concerto, with the string and piano parts being orchestrated. I heard that version on the radio a while back on WNYC, a classicval radio station in New York City. It's a nice piece, very beaustiful and sensual. I think carl fisher made an edition of it if you're trying to get the music. -Dylan

Name of the tune is:
"Overture on the Hebrew Themes"
It was written on the request of the Simeon Beilison - clarinetist who was friend with Prokofiev since their years in the St.Peterburg Concervatory.
Beilison, who was later the Principal for the NY Phil.Orchestra for 40 years, was the founder of the ZIMRO ensemble and the been looking for the opening number.
When he asked Prokofiev to write something, the answer was: "I don't write "Ethnic" music. So Beilisson left but left small book of Jewish Folk Melodies.
Afer prokofiev looked at the music and like it SO MUCH, he wrote OVERTURE practically overnite.
Right now Overture exists in two forms:
1. Original - Clar.,String Quartet & Piano
2. Arrangement for Symphony Orch. - made by Prokofiev himself.
I am a Principal Clarinetist of the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony and we play this piece at least once a season - mostly the original version.
