Hi there
After years of playing tenor sax, I have finally gotten the urge and started playing clarinet, and I just love it!
I am going on vacation soon to Istanbul and Athens, and I would be interested in buying either a Turkish or Greek clarinet, but I know little about them, except that there are metal Turkish horns, which sounds really interesting to me being a sax player. I understand the Turkish horns are in the key of G - do they usually use the Albert system? I am just barely getting used to the Boehm!
Does anyone know of a reputable shop in Istanbul (where I am staying longer) or in Athens? I understand the the prices are very reasonable over there (I am in the US).
Any info about these instruments would be most helpful, I am especially intrersted in klezmer and roma music, where the clarinet playing just kills me!
thanks much!

"Turkish" klarnets are indeed in low G and are typically metal and Albert system. Greek klarino players play C, Bb, A, or G depending on repertoire or region (Kalakos may have more info on this board if he sees the question). The Greeks usually use wood horns. Some Greeks and Turks use wooden G clarinets too, but it depends on their income level I think. The Orsi wooden G Albert clarinets are excellent instruments but they were around $1000 USD about 5 years ago. The Turkish klarnets from Turkey (RKOR brand) run anywhere from $250 to $400 depending on the seller here in the US. Not sure of their cost in Turkey.
I do not have any information on Athens or Istanbul, but I know a reference for you. At the East European Folklife Center's website, there is a listserv you can join which has loads of members and additional info about Balkan, Greek, Turkish, and general E. Eur. stuff. Not so much specific Klezmer but all the other stuff.
Their website is at http://www.eefc.org and I believe (although I haven't been there recently) that you can search the archives through there somewhere in addition to joining the email discussion.

Hi, Katrina:
Good advice Katrina; most Greek clarinetists these days are playing Bb and sometimes A clarinets (especially if playing with women singers who like to sing in F# minor); a few use G, but usually wood. Some also play C clarinets; all in simple or Albert system; very few have ever used Boehm system. As to where to buy them I would just recommend asking people; of course, especially musicians, but other people can steer a person to music stores.
Good luck.
