As it turned out, we ended up using the original. I was primarily Reed 1 but pulled the lead clarinet parts out of reed 2 when needed. We had 1 other read player who played the oboe and Eng Horn stuff out of reed 3 plus a few clarinet parts transposed to oboe. A very small pit (2 violins, 2 trumpets, horn, the 2 reed players, the MD on keys, bass and drums) but it came off fairly well. SO...I unfortunately can't answer your question on the alternate orchestration.
