 Recommendations to Beginner Flute
Author: Fabian

I'm currently searching for a beginner flute to recommend my Uncle to practice on. This is his first instrument and as I'm a Clarinetist myself, I don't know too much about Flutes altogether.

Can people recommend some beginnerlevel to intermediatelevel flute models? I live in Singapore and Yamaha seems like the most prominent musical instrument shop and it's beginner models listed are YFL211S and YFL221S, and the intermediate models are YFL261 and YFL281 and YFL331.

Also, if there are other noteworthy flute manufactors, please recommend to.

Thanks and have a good day.

Yamaha flutes are excellent. Personally, I prefer the silver plate student model to the nickel model. I've found Yamaha flutes to be well made and have a lovely quality of sound. Personally, I prefer open tone holes. I also think the off-set G is important to have....especially for us older folks.

Here's a "secret" about student versus intermediate Yamaha flutes: Unless you spend the extra money to get a 400-series flute -- which has an EC model head joint in sterling silver -- there is little tonal difference between the 200 and 300 series flutes. That is, it does not make that much difference in one's sound if you have a sterling silver flute body versus a silver plate body if the head joint is silver plate.

With this in mind, I think a Yamaha 200 series with open tone holes and off-set G (I think this is standard on Yamaha student flutes but please confirm) will be a perfectly good flute for your uncle.
