There has probably been previous discussion of this topic, but I don't seem to be able to find it. I've recently returned to the clarinet after a thirty-eight year absence - it's GOOD to be back! My current mouthpieces are a B45, and occasionally a Mitchel Lurie crystal. Use a Rovner MkIII ligature, and Mitchell Lurie 4 1/2 reeds (I'm also on a quest for the perfect reed) or Grand Concert 4s. I'd like to try some new mouthpieces, but need some advice as to which ones I might consider. There's so dang many of them. I like to play a lot of dixieland, if that helps, and things like the Artie Shaw concerto. So I thought I'd throw out this request and see what some experts thought. And in my situation, just about anyone else is an expert to me. Just looking for some general ideas about what I might start trying out. Also, my current horn is a Yamaha Allegro, but I dream of getting something a little more top-of-the line.

I played on a the exact set up yours except I use a Leb l300. My community band Director (who is a clarinetist) and a visiting soloist that gave a master class suggested the Vand M13. I tried it and loved it. It gives me a very rich sound and I would say the nicest tone I have ever had (I also switched to ML 5 reed). I play mostly classical and it may not be very good for jazz playing. I think the general rule of thumb is a softer reed and a more open mp facilitates jazz playing. I am not very successful when it comes to bending notes and glissandos on my set up, although I don’t know if it would be any better with my old set up. The desire to learn is there but the road to it makes me sound like a beginner and I find it frustrating. Just remember the rule of mps and Irish families "the more the merrier"

Interesting about the vd 13 since I just got one that came with a horn I bought and I like it a lot.

Hi Vic,
I have tried a number of mouthpieces and keep going back to a Portnoy BP02 with a VD 3 to 3 1/2 or a La Vo MH. I'm into some kind of big tone zen!

Big tone zen?!?!? When I think "big tone" I think Pete Fountain, whose tone has also been described as "fat," which is about as apt a description for his sound as I can imagine. That's kind of what I'm looking for, too. Woodwind-Brasswind will let one test 3 mpcs at any one time. I see that they have a Portnoy BP02 and maybe I'll try one of those. I'd like to try that VD M13, too, that Bob and FredR mentioned. I enjoy playing classical as well as dixieland, especially K622. Every time I play it or hear it, I find something new. Not saying I'm any good at it, I just enjoy it.

Hi Vic,
Yes, the BP02 for me has a huge sound, and I mean really big. While many of my VD and the Chedeville all have a terrific classical sound, they do not have the fat, round tone of the Portnoy. But then, maybe it's just me :-).
