Is the Selmer Signet classed as an intermediate model and is there a difference between the Selmer Signet 100 and the Selmer Special?

Jeff-

I would say the Signet 100 is on the "low" side of intermediate, if not just a student model. The Signet Special has a little better construction, including rings around the ends of the joints. I believe there was another Signet that was still better, but don't have any information on it. (I'm not sure Signets are still in production.)

I have the Signet Special, which I purchased used for $150, back in 1976. My guess it that it would currently cost around $250 in good condition. It is quite adequate for non-professional use, although there are other intermediate models that may be better (such as those from Buffet or LeBlanc).

At one time there was a Signet "Soloist" model, which I understand was the top of the Signet (USA made) line. Unlike most Signets, the Soloist had integral (no plastic inserts) and fraised tone holes. Like the Special, the Soloist had tenon caps and was made from select (a higher than normal grade?) wood, and came with a Selmer Paris HS* mouthpiece. Probably a mid-grade intermediate horn.

There is/was a Signer Soloist. I have a very old one (1971/2). It has a larger bore than an R13. Overall I think it is a nice intermediate instrument. You might also look for a Evette and Schaeffer Master Model. I don't know if they are made any more.

No the Evette models are all discontinued. Buffet now has the E-11 and E-13. I would guess that the E-13 would be about the same level as the Master Model.

There is also the Buffet E-12. These (E-11, E-12, and E-13)have always been made in Germany. The Evette models were French clarinets.

I once owned a Selmer Signet "Special"; and because I knew there were at least 3 different models of the Selmer "Signet" intermediate-level clarinet, I called the Selmer Co. for some enlightenment....they informed me that the only real difference between the Selmer Signet 100 & the Selmer Signet "Special" model was that the Selmer Signet "Special" was given a better mouthpiece (such as a Selmer HS* or one of their other pro-grade mpcs); also, the "Special" may have been made of wood that was a tad better quality than the Signet 100. The "Soloist" was the top model in th Signet line; I've seen some with chrome-plated keywork instead of the usual nickel-plating.....gave it a sort of pale bluish-looking hue in bright lighting....very sharp-looking & also made the keywork more impervious to corrosion & dulling.
