hi guys,
I use vandoren v12 size 2.5 reeds most of the time and like them pretty well. the tone and response feels perfect for me, but something strange happens when i play in the auditorium. the same reed that played great at home or in the practice room sounds weak and thin in the auditorium. does anybody know why? is it just my perception of the sound in a different room? I find I have to go up to a 3 which takes more effort and i cant articulate as well, but the sound in general is fuller and just sounds nicer. my question is this....if i use size 3.5's, will it make using the 3's easier, or would it be a waste of time to do this? i'm thinking about the batter who swings 2 bats before he steps up to the plate. and if it would help, how long should I play on it for? i find 10 or 15 min on this strength is very tiring, should i make myself go longer?

Janlynn...You have just discovered one of the important concepts about reeds. A reed which is bright and clear in a very small setting often does not have the "body" to project in a larger hall. To use your baseball analogy: It would be similar to a batter using a very light bat to hit with: It may be very easy to swing it fast, but it would not have the weight to hit a home run with.
It sounds as if playing on a #2.5 reed may to light for you. My suggestion, to prove this theory would be to have a friend bring a tape recorder into the auditorium and tape you playing on a #2.5 and then on a #3. You will probably find that the #3 will be fuller and carry better.
If the #3 reed is a little balky on articulation, work with your teacher on learning how to adjust reeds. it is an important concept to learn, and in the end will save you a lot of frustration...
Moving up to a #3.5 reed at this time will not accomplish anything...GBK

In an auditorium setting you're probably blowing more forcefully to match the level of those around you. It's likely that you need a stronger reed, and I agree with GBK that you should first move up to a 3.

Trying a thicker heel reed may deserve an experiment such as V12, Marca Traditional, Alexander Classic, Rico Grand Concert Thick Blank, and Zonda when you shift up to 3.
