 Filed and unfiled reeds

On the Rico home page they characterize some reeds as "french filed", others as "unfiled". What does that mean - what's the difference?

I presume that rico means that french filed is where the bark/outside layer of the cane is removed in a straight line around half way down the reed. Once this is done they have then cut the vamp and finished the reed off. As far as i know most of the rico range are french filed. The unfiled/or sometimes called American filed reed is where they don't cut the bark off and just cut the vamp of the reed. This means that the bark comes down the vamp of the reed a little in a U shape. The Rico Grand concert select Evolution reeds are cut this way and they are the best reeds that i have ever used. How they are filed is probably not going to affect how good a reed is produced though. Well i don't think so and am not quite sure but someday soon I might file the bark off a few of my evolutions to see if it makes any difference.
Hope this is not too confusing,

Jonathan Farquhar (Aus)
