 Yamaha YCL 85 A clarinet
Author: mameshiba

Hi,

I am offered a Yamaha YCL 85 custom A clarinet. It has matching serial numbers 00221, it sounds good, no leaks, cracks or whatsoever. I am not familiar with Yamaha, not that I am good with other brands :), and it still has the 'Nippon Gaki' mark.
I only know that its a profesional older model. Tried searching the forum but couldn't find much infos abt this clarinet.

Thank You

My son is learning to play clarinet now!

Traditionally, a "Nippon Gakki" ("Japanese Musical Instrument") was used by Yamaha a long time back. I had an excellent FG150 guitar made in the 60s by Yamaha with the "Nippon Gakki" mark.

I remember seeing this on Yamaha clarinets in the 80's and even early 90's. After that I am not sure. Here is info on the 85

The YCL-82 (Bb) and YCL-85 (A) were Yamaha's first Custom line model clarinets from the late '70s and were replaced by the 82II (Bb) and 85II (A) in around 1985 (until 1988).

The clarinet you describe is most likely a fine instrument, the former Principal clarinet of the NZSO played one of these for years (he in fact switched to them after playing Wurlitzer reform boehm) and I greatly regret selling the one that I played while doing undergraduate studies (and my first professional gigs)

I liked the old 'Nippon Gakki' info on the older 60 and 60II series Yamahas (Eb, Bb, A, alto and bass clarinets) where the writing formed a semicircle below the model name. The 60 series were Yamaha's pro models and the 80 series being their Custom models and both 60 and 80 series instruments were impeccably built.

Hi,

Thank you for the replies n infos, guys. Really appreciate it. Its kinda difficult to get a good clarinet down here. Infact clarinet is pretrty much unknown, whereas saxophone is a big thing down here, almost every woodwind players are sax players, flute is next on the line. The common reaction when I tell someone that I play clarinet is either 1.......(Blank look) or 2. Aaah, the one that Kenny G play right?....
Anyway, the clarinet does have a nice sound and it seems that news abt the clarinet is being offered has been circulating and others are eyeing on it as well :).
I thinnk I wll buyt this ycl 85.

Thank You

My wifes student (doing Masters at Uni) somehow ended up with my YCL 85 I sold in 1992!!!!!!!!!! She came along to a lesson with a new A clarinet, and I checked out the serial number when I saw it.... funny old world! (she won't sell it back to me :-()
