Hard to say but I can tell you that back in the day when I was a young player (in the 1960s), the vast majority of Italian (and French) clarinetists played double lip. And that includes my original teachers (both Italian) and their teachers before them. Not surprisingly, I too have always played double lip and still do to this day.

My recollection is that nobody made a big deal about double or single lip in those days and but that double lip was (in my mind at least), considered the "normal" way to play the clarinet. Even the great Benny Goodman switched to double lip at one point after taking lessons with Reginald Kell.

There were as I recall lots of players who were neither Italian nor French who played double lip (Ralph McLean and Harold Wright, for example). I think it's still the same today.
