Noblet barrel - Brilhart and Vandoren MP
Author: rlages

Hi, I've just bought a Noblet Artist presumably from 76.

But the tip of the barrel fits loosely on my Vandoren B45. MP.

On the other hand the Brilhart Ebolin MP that came with it fits really tight.

I'm confused that it sounds really better with the Brilhart MP than with the Vandoren.

I don't know if it worths to figured out a way of fitting better the Vandoren and it would sounds event better, or I should just enjoy the Brilhart as it seems to be just as good to play and sounds ok. Tough the low F is too flat and I don't know if it's due to MP or any other reason. Other notes including E and F sharp are right on the spot.

Thanks for your views on this topic.

Wedge the VD piece in with cigarette paper and see if that transforms it.

try wraping some teflon plumbers tape around the cork to get a better fit and see how it plays

I did it (the plumber's tape) and the I still liked more the Brilhart. It produces a softer tone in the low register and still can sound bright in the middle and higher register.

The Vandoren MP kept a brighter tone in all the registers.

Though Brilhart is not rated as a good MP, I'll follow my ear on this.

Regarding the low F pitch it is still flat, but I'm getting the way for correcting it in the embouchure.

Thanks for your assistance!

There are many, many players for whom the Vandoren B45 is a poor choice. Go with your ear; stick with the Brilhart if it works for you.

Pro Tip: Use a black mouthpiece patch on the beak to prevent wear, and nobody will suspect you're playing a Brilhart.

Noblets are quite bright, in a nice kind of way. So it’s basically about matching of mouthpiece to instrument.
