 Altissimo scales/exercises

Hi all

I hope everyone had a good holiday and New Year.

I am looking for (if it exists) material/exercise/scales that focus on primarily the altissimo range.

I restarted playing the clarinet after a 20 year break and have been making good progress on memorising my scales (major + minor up to 5 sharps/flats so far). I have been using the Albert scale method and have dipped into Baermann as this also moves into the Altissimo where Albert doesn’t.

I am finding my dexterity/muscle memory when it comes to the Altissimo fingerings as well as the voicing required for anything above F# needs some focussed work so I was wondering does any material exist in this area? I know I could create my own altissimo only scales/arpeggios in all the keys but figured I would ask in case something already exists.

Many thanks

Simon O’Brien

There are numerous fingering charts for the extreme altissimo. I can send you one if you email me.
Another way to practice altissimo scales and high notes in general is to buy some flute method books.

The Rudolph Jettel Clarinet Method (or Clarinet Schule) Book II covers scales in all keys, and many of the exercises have difficult extended high register patterns. ;

Yes, Jettel is great. There are several books including a "Preliminary" one, which I think is as hard as any of them.

“Altissimo studies for clarinet” by Thomas J Filas transcribed by William R Higgins would be a great place to start. I find I need to pay close attention to not allowing my thumb to inadvertently move the tiniest bit to avoid a miniscule leak to have success in the altissimo register.

Thanks everyone. I have placed an order for Altissimo studies for clarinet as suggested by Liz. I will make sure the house is empty before I tackle this one :D

Dr. Joshua Gardner from Arizona State University, Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, School of Music, has a website, Paradisewinds.org
Under the education tab there is a link to
Clarinet Fundamentals, A Workbook for Developing Clarinet Technique

https://paradisewinds.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Clarinet-Fundamentals_condensed_v1.7.pdf

It has three octave scales and other studies and he also incorporates suggested fingerings

An excellent resource
