 bass clarinet method book
Author: Maruja

I would be grateful if anyone could recommend a bass clarinet method book. I
have googled, of course, but the books I have found seem to be more pieces for the bass rather than technique focussed. I have just hired one for a couple of months for a bit of fun; obviously, lessons are out of the question even if I could find someone who would be willing to give me a couple, just to get started. I can 'play' most of the notes but the tone is not very beautiful! Any suggestions gratefully received.

Check out Van Cott — some method books are listed below the listings of symphonic excerpts.

For the most part, soprano clarinet books are fine for practice, but special books for extended range basses will certainly be helpful for developing dexterity with the auxiliary keys.

I always used clarinet methods for my students but my website has some articles on playing bass that might be helpful.

Do you read bass clef? Cello methods might be useful for the extended notes of a C bass, and it would be helpful, too, in improving your bass clef reading if that's not a strong skill for you.

Alea Publishing has a very good adaptation of the Baermann Third Division scale studies for the Low C bass clarinet that I work out of when I am being good about eating my vegetables.

Not sure if that's what you are looking for, but there's a good bass clarinet book by Jean Marc Volta.

Suggest you watch some of Michael Lowenstern's YouTube videos. He gives great advice and also mentions a number of books that may be of interest to you. Most recently, he's plugged a book by Kristen Denny-Chambers written for young players that has really great basic tunes and exercises.
