Famous method book equivalent for Piano
Author: GenEric

Hey folks! I had just a quick question. So for clarinet, I know that some books are almost essentials for clarinetists to own. For example, I know a lot of teachers swear by the Baermann scale book and 40/32 Rose Studies/Etudes. Is there a piano equivalent for those books? I'm getting back into piano, and I'm not exactly sure where to start.

Sorry for posting this in a clarinet forum... However, I think only clarinetists will understand the method books that I'm referring to.

Hannon comes to mind for technique studies. I'm sure there are others, but that's what I have in my music drawer.

As for etudes, my limited experience as a piano student was that there is so much literature at all levels for piano that an equivalent to the Rose etudes isn't needed.

Bartok's Mikrokosmos and some of the easier Bach keyboard pieces come to mind, but, no, they're not the equivalent of Baermann and Rose. The James Bastien piano series is a tried-and-true piano series used by many teachers to build a good musical foundation.

I got a lot out of a couple of the volumes of Alexander Peskanov Technical regimen when I came back to piano as a a young adult. Each volume features a different technical them such as Arpeggios and Blocked Chords, Broken Chords, etc.

I vaguely recall from my young piano student days that I had the Hannon and it was quite good.
