 regarding Play Testing
Author: Ben Shaffer
Date:   2020-08-05 18:14

In this time of the Pandemic Repair People are needing to be very careful in handling or blowing on the Instruments they are working on
I know of at least one repair Person that no longer Play Tests a Clarinet he is overhauling or doing key adjustments on
My question is can you do overhauls and key adjusting and get things done right and not Play Test or is is Play Testing an important and necessary Part of the repair process?
Just wondering

Pads either seal or they don't and new corks either hold solidly or are too thick - can be tested by feel. My repairman doesn't very often play my instruments as he works on them, but I'm usually with him in the shop and if there's anything that could involve personal preference, he'll ask me to check it before I leave the shop.

I confess, though, I don't know if he plays on the instrument himself if the owner isn't there. I suspect he probably does.

When I taught in school, I too often sent instruments to our contracted repair shop only to get them back no better than I when I sent them. I suspected that they had been moved from the "in" pile to "out," hopefully by mistake, without ever having been worked on. Those big shops with multiple people working in them and frequent turnover of workers generally have a shop foreman who should play test each instrument before it's sent back.

With the exception of straightening a key (or a similar operation) I can not repair without play testing. It's not finished till it plays right.
