 Recordings of clarinet etudes?
Author: igalkov

Hi guys,
I've finally got a CD set Seabreeze mentioned in this thread:
http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=434035&t=433986
"Naoko Kotaniguchi plays Uhl etudes", it's great (and thank you Seabreeze!), she is very good performer and I never had my hands on Uhl and bought this primarly to know is it worth trying. I wonder, if any of you know any other professional recordings (NOT all those homegrown youtubers out there) of clarinet studies? I once heard a CD of Sabine Grofmeier made Baermann op. 64 accompanied pieces, but her sound concept turn me off right from the start… Maybe you know any other recordings of such things? Any suggestions are highly appreciated, thanks!

This CD is of a selection from Voxman's "Classical Studies for Clarinet" (you can buy it bundled with the sheet music as well as separately):

You can listen to some samples here: https://www.kathrynepirtle.com/music-of-js-bach

If you buy Philippe Cuper's French edition of the Rose 32 Studies, a CD of him performing them (with very light piano accompaniment) is included. He has also done a similar edition and recording of some Klose studies, 14 Etudes, Op. 18.

Charles Neidich's editions of Cavallini 30 Caprices and the Jeanjean 18 are provided with a CD of him performing these.

The Cuper and Neidich editions and CDs are available from Van Cott Music, a sponsor of this list. https://www.vcisinc.com. In the "Clarinet" category,
click on "Studies and Exercises."

Seabreeze: I haven't heard Philippe Cuper's recording of the Rose études, but have heard him do a few in public; beautifully, of course. The piano parts are tastefully done and turn these étdues into real concert pieces. It was a really good idea to have them added on, though, needless to say, we can go on practising the Rose études unaccompanied as we always have.

Igalkov,

I was about to recommend another CD of pieces from the Baermann method, but on relistening it didn't seem as good. If you want to hear a fine Oehler system player do music written by Heinrich and Carl Baermann (but not from the Baermann method book), I can recommend Dario Zingales's CD "Heinrich and Carl Baermann, Music for Clarinet and Piano" Brilliant Classics CD 95785. It's available from Amazon and the famous web auction site as well.

Kal Opperman's 'Intermediate Velocity Studies For Clarinet' contains a CD with Adam Ebert playing every study. Yes it is possible to play them!
Be sure the book contains the DC. Some have been sold with the CD missing.

Thank you all, I’ll look into all of your suggestions.
Just for the record: I have a latest edition of Opperman Intermediate studies, there’s no more a CD attached but a download code for an mp3 audio from Carl Fischer website.

igalkov, that is a shame. Someone may have removed it and resold the rest, or it is an illegal copy.

Ken, it’s an official bought at Presto Music. All references to CD removed and changed to MP3. Download is from official Carl Fischer website.

CDs are going out of style. Everything is on the Web and the Cloud but, oddly enough, vinyl LPs may be coming back as a more reliable and long-lasting way to preserve aural records.

I suppose in the newer cars, you just download MP3s with voice activation while driving!
