Julius Rietz Concerto from the Geneva International Music Competition

Here's a rare chance to hear an amazing concerto that may not be widely known. The performance is really good but suffers from some weird mic issues. The other performances are also available and are worth watching. My favorite of the top three is this performer followed by the 3rd place contestant. The winner isn't my cup of tea...

Concerto starts around 15:30

Sound like "multi-path" distortion ... multiple microphones summed in the mixer, each receiving similar signals but with different delays due to the spacing ... you get weird short echos and funky comb filtering (more is less, in this case) ... I've often recorded moderately sized symphony orchestras with soloist, using just two Earthworks omni-directional microphones about 42-68 cm apart and hanging 12-14 feet high, just behind the conductor ... the imaging and clarity is astounding with simple recordings like this, if you find the "sweet spot" for microphone placement ...
