 Editions of Debussy Premiere Rhapsodie
Author: Claudia Zornow

Which edition of the Debussy Premiere Rhapsodie do you all like the best? I would like to buy a better copy than the one I downloaded from IMSLP (Durand). I see that editions from Chester, Henle, Southern Music, and more are also available.

Thanks,
Claudia

I recently bought the G. Henle Edition. I like it the best over my old copy which was Durand.

For study, Guy Dangain's 2013 edition of the Rhapsody is based on an examination of "two original manuscripts," and discrepancies between the two are shown. The Gunter Heinemann 2004 edition for Henle may be easier to use for performance if you are not concerned with the variations in the original manuscripts.

Definitely Henle (with piano) and Bärenreiter (if you want to play with an orchestra).

Dangain's edition was used by Ricardo Morales for his Philadelphia Orchestra Performances of it. (borrowed my Music).

He wanted to play the original manuscript version as closely as possible.

Henle Edition is also really great.

Henle. They tell you what decisions they've made, so you can make different ones if you want. It's also easy to read. Haven't seen the Bärenreiter, though. Henle considers the orchestra version relevant to playing it with piano, as representing his final, rather than original, intention. Whether you agree with them will probably influence your feelings about the edition.
