 Copland-Music for the Theatre

¿Are there two versions of this piece? In some of the recordings on YouTube the eefer has lots of glissandos and grace notes but the part I was given doesn't have any. Also, someone wrote in pencil "Polivnick edit" on the part.

Personally, I just put them in. It sounds better and the conductor usually agrees. I do the same with El salon Mexico. Again, it just sounds better.

Got to play under Copland but not the Concerto. There weren't any added notations done by him directly. I agree with Fernie as you can do what you like. Copland was pretty open to how people played his music and often commented that the tempo markings were just guidelines.

One comment he made directly to me was the disagreement with the Cencerto being played way too fast. It was more of a jazz piece so he wanted the feel of a Big Band 1940's New York style. Not how how players triple tongue the candensa.

So play his pieces with emotion, flair, and fun. This is what he wanted. His style was not Chopin. In fact an old Rock group turned Billy the Kid and other pieces into a rock form. Sadly 2 of the 3 players in the group have passed away. The group was Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. So this gives you an idea of how Copland was open minded to fit into all types of music. Pretty cool composer and a fun man to play under.
