 440 or 442 VanDoren RV5 Mouthpiece?
Author: Ben Shaffer

Quick question.
I play in a local Community Band as well as a Church Band.
I'm going to buy a new van Doren RV5 MP.
Which Pitch would be the best choice, the 442 or the M13 series (440)?
I currently play a leBlanc Vito V40 with a 66mm Barrel.
And also you wonder if having either a 442 or 440 in these Bands would actually sound very much different?
Thanks,
Ben

You choose the mouthpiece that allows you to tune to the pitch of the band/orchestra you play with when the instrument is warmed up to playing temperature.
It's best to actually be pulled out about 1mm when the above is achieved as this gives you some flexibity to play up to pitch before you are fully warmed up or in a cool concert hall.

The M13 doesn't actually play at 442 it just plays a bit flatter than the non-13 series.
The actual pitch you play at depends on You, Your Mouthpiece, Your barrel length, Your reed, Your instrument etc. So the final pitch can only be determined by taking all these factors into consideration.

In simple terms, if you tend to play flat then steer clear of the M13 series and/or use a shorter barrel.

You have to try. The typical choice is between 1) a regular mouthpiece with a longer barrel and 2) a 13-series mouthpiece with a shorter barrel. They might produce the same average tone height but the intonation within the clarinet will be different.

442 and get a really good barrel. My mouthpieces are about 441 to 442 or so, depending on the horns and the barrel length. 65mm's to 66mm's.

Remember in an orchestra or a band the oboes and flutes go to about 442 in the upper registers. The clarinets, mainly Buffet R13's drop down to maybe 439 or lower. The R13's with the Vandoren M series MP's. (mouthpieces) I've talked about this many times. The Vandoren M series mouthpieces can be about 1/16th" longer than most most mouthpieces. I find this so frustrating. They, Vandoren call it the American pitch. What is the American pitch? Jerks. With an R13 you often have to use a 64mm on an A clarinet barrel and this can surely throw off the 12ths.

Vandoren should recall all of the M series mouthpieces. They are that bad. The bore tapers are also way too big.

Yes, in your parallel universe.

I like my M30 profile 88. I use it on a Yamaha 650. My middle C( concert Bb )is spot on. Reponse and intonation are fine. My daughter , who goes to Cornell and plays in their wind ensemble , just bought a M30 and likes it. When I talked to Clark Fobes on the phone when I bought my blue 10K bass clarinet mouthpiece he stated it’s one of the vandorens he likes. I’m puzzled why you hate on the vandoren Ms.
